The RiverSmart Homes (RSH) Ambassador Program seeks interested residents in Wards 7 and 8 to be extensions of the RiverSmart Homes program. RiverSmart Ambassadors provide unique outreach and engagement support by informing their neighbors, friends, and family about the RiverSmart Homes program, speaking at local ANC/Civic Association meetings, and promoting RiverSmart rebates and incentives, while spreading watershed stewardship.

RiverSmart Ambassadors educate residents about the issues of stormwater pollution and what they can do to keep our waterways clean. Ambassadors have access to stormwater education resources, resources and information on the RiverSmart Homes Program, and support from RiverSmart staff.

RiverSmart Ambassadors participate in a minimum of 2 events or activities per 6 month service period, including attending tabling or outreach events, contacting ANC members, or canvassing at least 50 homes in coordination with DOEE.

The RiverSmart Homes Ambassador Program won 1st Place for Best Education & Outreach Project (2023) in the Best Urban BMP in the Bay Award (BUBBAs)!

About Us

“If homeowners do not capture and treat storm water runoff on their property, the Anacostia River is likely to experience water and pollutant overflow, further threatening the health of the local watershed and resilience of the community. Therefore, voluntary homeowner action and participation in the RiverSmart Homes Program is critical to improving the health of the local waterways and creating more resilient communities in the face of these threats.”

Name: Yvonne

Neighborhood: Woodridge

Why did you become an Ambassador? I became an Ambassador so that my sharing of the RiverSmart program is on an official basis.

I’ve been sharing with friends & neighbors since learning about the program in 2018. As a native Washingtonian, I want to ensure more Washingtonians are aware of the benefits of the small things that each of us can do to help the environment.

What are you looking forward to in the new year? I’m looking forward to connecting with the community by sharing the benefits of creating a health habitat for pollinators & reducing stormwater runoff that residents can create in the form of beautiful gardens for themselves to enjoy.

Name: Travis

Neighborhood: Congress Heights

Stormwater Management Practices: Rain Barrels and Bayscape

What are you looking forward to in the new year?  Participating in more community events and potentially new ways to really promote the RiverSmart Homes program to all DC residents!
